American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons
The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons was established in 1899. Its initial mission was to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge relating to the colon, rectum, and anus; to encourage proctologic research; and to advance the specialty of colon and rectal surgery. Colon and rectal surgery is one of the oldest recognized specialties. Writings dating as early as 1250 B.C. dealt with anorectal diseases and indicate there were practitioners devoted to this specialty.
Pennsylvania Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons - In 1929, Dr. Harry E. Bacon submitted to Dr. Collier Ford Martin an organized plan whereby the founding of a local society for the encouragement and dissemination of knowledge pertinent to diseases of the Anal Canal, Rectum and Colon would be established. As the organizational plan evolved, it provided for the establishment of investigation and scientific research. Educational programs were planned to promote progress and improvement in diagnosis and treatment. Further progress by this group lent encouragement to the organization of societies elsewhere in the United States and throughout the free world. The greatest earliest achievement of this organization was to serve as a supporting organization for the National
Society, namely The American Proctologic Society.
"We treat each patient as if they were a member of our family and take the time to listen and answer patient questions. We believe patients recover quicker and their outcomes are better when they fully understand their condition and treatment." James J. Baran, MD
